Mr. Futter set the tour off with some expert commentary on the approach to the town, pointing out the strategic importance of the Great North Road, before leading a walk around the Queen's Sconce, a remarkably intact redoubt on the outskirts of the town.
Students then had a walking tour of the town, led by expert witness John Twentyman, before getting to grips with original swords and coins, and trying on clothes and handling weapons of the time at the Civil War Centre.
Mr. Axelby, Head of History, said:
“This was an excellent visit, led by the expert staff at the Civil War Centre to whom we are very grateful. Students will take much of value from today to help with their local study projects on the Civil War.”
