On Friday, 28 June, Air Cadets from Worksop College Combined Cadet Force (RAF) took the plunge into the world of scuba diving. The scuba try dive, held at Worksop College's pool, was a resounding success, providing an unforgettable underwater experience for the cadets.
The event was facilitated by a collaborative team comprising Plt Off James Keightley of Worksop College CCF (RAF), Phil Brown (Diving Officer) from Worksop College BSAC 2629 branch, Sqn Ldr Peter Maskell (RAF), and Flt Sgt James Woodley (RAF). Generous support in the form of scuba diving equipment was provided by RAF Wittering BSAC branch 305, ensuring the cadets had the best possible experience.
The session began with a comprehensive introduction to scuba equipment, where cadets learnt the basics of underwater breathing and gear handling. This was followed by a hands-on diving session in the college pool. For many of the cadets, it was their first encounter with the underwater world, marking a significant and thrilling milestone in their training.
Two cadets, already qualified divers through PADI and BSAC, had the opportunity to refresh their skills, relishing the chance to dive again. Cadet Corporal Zafirov, one of the participants, expressed his excitement, stating, "It was amazing. I have never done anything like this before and now I just want to learn to dive."
This try dive event was more than just an adventurous activity; it underscored Worksop College's commitment to its values of support, encouragement, and challenge. By facilitating such unique experiences, the college aims to nurture exceptional individuals who embody confidence, resilience, and humility.
Furthermore, the event aligned with the Air Cadets' ethos and core values of excellence, self-discipline, teamwork, courage, and responsibility. It provided cadets with a platform to enhance their skills and develop a greater sense of self and team dynamics in a new and challenging environment.
Phil Brown, representing the Worksop College BSAC 2629 branch, remarked on the importance of such collaborative efforts. "This event demonstrates the tremendous impact we can have when BSAC branches come together, especially in promoting scuba diving to younger audiences. We are eager to offer many more diving opportunities in the near future."
Worksop College CCF (RAF) and the Worksop College BSAC branch are looking forward to building on the success of this event, with plans to offer more engaging and challenging activities that promote personal growth and community spirit amongst cadets.
