We believe that mental health and emotional wellbeing are integral to a fulfilling education. Our approach is built on the understanding that psychological development, education, and healing must be integrated for optimal impact. We want the wellbeing of our pupils to be at the heart of everything we do, and we are committed to creating a supportive, accessible, and stigma-free environment.
Our Approach
1. Early Intervention & Accessibility
One of the key barriers to mental health support is accessibility. We have moved into a phase of prioritising early intervention by empowering our pupil-tutor teams with the knowledge, skills, and resources to provide lower-intensity support before issues escalate. Our QR code self-referral system, discreetly placed in planners and communal areas, ensures that pupils can seek support confidentially.
2. Tackling the Stigma
Despite increased awareness, stigma surrounding mental health remains. We actively reinforce positive narratives within our school community, ensuring that asking for help is seen as a sign of strength rather than weakness. Pupil-led initiatives, open discussions, and staff training all contribute to this shift in culture.
3. A Multi-Faceted Support System
We recognise that no single approach fits all. Our mental health and wellbeing provision includes:
-
1-to-1 and interventions to build resilience and coping strategies.
-
A comprehensive PSHE curriculum addressing emotional health, resilience, and self-awareness.
-
Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) practices integrated into contemplative education.
-
Empathic listening training and a Peer Listener scheme, ensuring pupils have support amongst peers.
-
Staff development and training, including CPD investment and an 8-week research-based mindfulness course undertaken by 18 staff members.
-
The STEER Programme, which equips tutors with insights into pupil wellbeing and practical strategies to support them.
-
Parent and staff workshops to encourage a joined-up approach to mental health.
The Willow Hub: A Space for Support
In response to the growing mental health crisis amongst young people, we developed the Willow Hub - a dedicated space for wellbeing support, early intervention, and resilience-building. Our system-wide culture continues to evolve, ensuring that every pupil feels supported at each stage of their journey. The Willow Hub provides a safe, welcoming environment where pupils can access help in a way that feels comfortable to them.
